Over-thinking Your Personal Mission Statement?

It is the beginning of the calendar year.  You might have had some time off – to “recharge”, or maybe not.

What are the important things to do as you re-enter your business or “job”?  If you are not careful you will be buried in advice from gurus and “thought-leaders” telling you to get your vision and mission and values and purpose and other “vital” thingies sorted.

I have decided in my life that this is the year of simplification.  If you have read my other blogs you will have an understanding of the Pareto concept applied fractally – which sounds woowoo but is very simple.

In a nutshell – if there a 100 things to do that would benefit you, then ONE of them will contain or deliver 51% of your possible benefits.  The TOP 4 will deliver 64%.

And if you flip it – ONE item if dealt with will reduce 51% of your pain or loss.  ie ONE problem is giving you 51% of your hassle in life.

And there you have it.  I will expand on exactly how to apply this later, but if you are an adult with a brain, you can figure it out.

Buckminster Fuller said the way to introduce a new tool is to give it to the population and let them figure out how to use it.  But here is a hint to get you rolling:  the top 1 item on each list has 51% weighting, and the next 3 items have 13%, the next 97 items have 36% of the value.  Which of the 100 things on your list is it intelligent to list and then work on with highest priority?

Or you could just keep doing the (almost) valueless stuff that you “feel” is easier?  See how that “feels” in a year or a decade or five.  Tell your “comfort zone” to get stuffed, make your list, identify number “1” and get into motion.

Here is a mission statement you can borrow:  “Help a lot of people a lot, make a ton of money, and have a stack of fun doing it.”  Three things, put them in any order.

Cheers

James
