Components of a powerful strategic plan
Let’s talk briefly about what you need in your plan. But first – to be clear – this is not a cut and paste plan that you want to slap together just to keep your bank manager under control. You might call that a “Business Plan” – and it has it’s uses and place.
A strategic plan is different. It is different in that it can become a living document – that is kept current, is referred to almost daily, and that gets better and better with each quarterly revisit.
Here are some of the components that I include in the process – which can be used by businesses of all size, as well as by non-profits and individuals. You can also use this structure to generate your own PERSONAL Strategic Plan.
Core Values & Purpose
State the most important principles that guide your teams every action and decision. Simply and clearly.
Big Hairy Audacious Goal
This 10-20 year target can be the guide for the selection of all strategies and timeframes that it overlooks.
Strategic KPI’s & Critical Numbers
Measurements must align with core values, strategies, tactics and scheduled actions. The numbers guide success of teams and individuals.
This dynamic document fits in with the other important documents of your business (like the organizational charts and process maps) to give the whole team clarity on where they fit in, the rules of behaviour and the importance of their roles.
The faster your business is growing, the more regularly you update your plan. The frequency also allows strategic consideration of changes in the environment of your business. One year can be too long to assume there will be no change in the environment. 90 day reviews mean a faster cycle and and greater achievement of goals and targets.
Every business owner can quickly learn to apply this process for the rapid benefit of their business. Within weeks you will see changes in your team and in yourself as clarity and confidence soar.
Symptoms caused by lack of strategic control and communication will fade. This can include high staff turnover, burnout, waste and low productivity. Your ability to attract and retain good performers and keep them motivated will increase.
